Coming to Center: Why Nervous System Regulation Must Precede Academic and Other Skill Development

Educators often outline educational and behavioral goals that teach children specific strategies that require higher level thinking, focus, self-monitoring, and an awareness of the external environment. This is not only inefficient, but it is also incompatible with neurodevelopment. During this presentation, participants will learn how the order of brain development relates to behavioral, academic, communication, and emotional growth. They will also learn how certain behaviors and academic challenges are indicators of nervous system dysregulation as well as techniques to help students come back to center so that academic, cognitive, behavioral, and emotional skills can develop more efficiently.
